Understanding POS Device Modes in NX Restaurant
In the NX platform, the "Mode" of a POS Device determines exactly how the application behaves when you open it on your tablet or terminal. Think of it as the "personality" of the device—one minute it can be a cashier station, and the next, it can be a kitchen display.
To manage these settings, navigate to Venue > Devices > POS Devices and select your specific device.
Default Mode vs. Current Mode
You will notice two primary mode settings in the device dashboard:
Default Mode: This is the "home base" for the device. If the app restarts or resets, it will automatically return to this selected state.
Current Mode: This shows you what the device is doing right now. You can update this from the management portal to remotely change what is appearing on your physical screen in the restaurant.

Available Modes
Depending on your hardware setup, you can toggle between several specialized modes:
| Mode | Description |
|---|---|
| Pos | The standard point-of-sale interface for taking orders and processing payments. |
| Kds | Kitchen Display System mode; turns the device into a digital order screen for the line. |
| Kiosk | A guest-facing interface for self-service ordering. |
| Host | Optimized for table management, waitlists, and seating guests. |
| Guest Display | A customer-facing screen that shows order totals and line items during checkout. |
| Menu Board | Turns the device into a digital display for your menu and pricing. |

Initial Setup: POS No Subscription
By default, all new devices load into POS No Subscription.
Important Note: In this mode, the device functions in a "demo" capacity. It will look and feel like the full POS, but you won't be able to process live transactions until a valid subscription license is claimed on the physical device or the mode is officially changed in the portal. How to Change the Mode
You have two ways to switch the state of your device:
From the Portal: Select the new Current Mode in the POS Device settings and click Save. The device will refresh to the new interface automatically.
-
From the Device: You can change the mode directly within the app settings on the station by tapping the Cloud Icon > Device Info > Change Mode.
