đź’ł How to Enable or Disable Tips in NX
Tips in NX are configured per Tender Type, giving you full control over how and when tips are entered. Two main settings—Require Tip and Prompt Tip—determine the guest and employee experience during payment.
Below is a clear guide to what each setting does and how to use them.
(Reference screenshot provided above.)
🧾 Where to Configure Tip Settings
Navigate to:
NX Portal → Configuration → Ordering → Tenders → Select a Tender (e.g., Credit)
Inside the Tender configuration page, scroll to the Tipping section. You'll see two key options:
✔️ Require Tip
What it does:
Enabling Require Tip means that every transaction completed with this tender must have a tip entered before the employee clocks out or completes their shift report.
🔍 Important behavior:
- A $0.00 tip is acceptable — the system just needs something recorded.
- The guest does not need to enter the tip at the time of the transaction.
- The employee can enter or adjust the tip later, anytime before clockout.
- Transactions missing a tip amount will be flagged as Missing Tip.
- Depending on job configuration, employees may be prevented from clocking out until all missing tips are resolved.
Best for:
✔️ Full-service restaurants
✔️ Tableside payments
✔️ Ensuring tip compliance at end-of-shift
đź’¬ Prompt Tip
What it does:
Enabling Prompt Tip causes the system to ask for a tip at the time of payment.
How the prompt appears:
- Guest-Facing Display: Tip suggestion buttons (e.g., 15%, 18%, 20%, Custom).
- Employee-Facing Screen: An Adjust Tip button appears immediately after approval, allowing the employee to enter or modify the tip right away.
Important notes:
- Prompting helps increase tip capture in the moment, but does not enforce that a tip must be entered.
- This setting is independent of Require Tip—you can use one, both, or neither.
Best for:
✔️ Quick-service environments
✔️ Counter service
✔️ Anywhere you want to gently encourage tipping
🧠How These Settings Work Together
| Setting Combo | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Require Tip ONLY | No prompt shown, but employee must enter tips before clockout. |
| Prompt Tip ONLY | Guest/employee sees prompts, but missing tips do NOT block clockout. |
| Both Enabled | Tip is prompted at checkout AND required before shift completion. |
| Neither Enabled | Tipping disabled entirely for this tender. |
📝 Summary
NX provides flexible tipping options so you can tailor the payment workflow to your service model:
- Require Tip = Enforce tip entry before shift end
- Prompt Tip = Suggest or request tips during the actual transaction
Use these settings per tender to create the ideal tipping experience for both your team and your guests. Let me know if you’d like a companion article for tip payout, tip retention, or guest-facing prompts!
