Provisioning an NX Device in Esper
This article provides instructions for NX Support Partners to create a new restaurant group and provision devices using Esper, our Mobile Device Management (MDM) tool. These steps ensure each device is registered under the correct restaurant subgroup and configured with the appropriate settings for use with NX Restaurant.
Overview
When setting up a new restaurant location, follow these two main steps:
- Create a New Subgroup under your NX Support Partner account.
- Provision Devices to that subgroup using the appropriate blueprint and naming convention.
Step 1: Create a New Subgroup
- In the Esper portal, go to Devices & Groups.
- Click the + Add button in the top-right corner.
- Select New Subgroup.
- In the Group Name field, enter the name of the restaurant group (e.g., New Restaurant Group).
- Add a description to help identify the group. (Optional)
- Click Create.
Note: Additional Subgroups can be created under an existing Subgroup for more organization which is helpful for management and deploying updates to controlled groups (Example: Parent Group: NX Support Partner/Restaurant Enterprise Name, Group Name: Restaurant Location #01 Name).
Step 2: Provision Devices
After the group is created, provision each device so it registers under the correct subgroup.
2.1 Go to the Provisioning Tab
- Navigate to the new restaurant subgroup you just created.
- Click the + Add button at the top of the screen, and select Device Record Registration.
2.2 Select Provisioning Options
- Select Device Platform: Choose Android.
- Select Provisioning Method: Choose Seamless Provisioning.
- Select Provisioning Blueprint:
- Use NX-Station for standard POS or KDS stations.
- Use NX-Handheld for handheld devices.
- Select Provisioning Group: Confirm that the group is set to the new restaurant subgroup you created.
2.3 Enter Device Details
- Select Unique Identifier Type:
- Select Device Serial Number.
- Enter the serial number that is displayed on the screen in the bottom left corner (this is different from the serial number listed on the external device labels and packaging).
- Alias (Optional but Recommended): Enter a name in the format:
- Partner Name - Restaurant Name - Station Designation (Example: TechReseller - Green Bistro - Station 2)
- Add up to five tags, separated by pressing Enter. (Optional)
2.4 Add the Device
- Click Add to provision the device.
- The device must be on wifi or hardwire ethernet with internet connectivity and the device turned on to provision.
- The device will provision after heartbeating back to Esper. If provisioning doesn't start reboot the device to force a fresh connection.
- Provisioning can take anywhere from 5 - 10 minutes depending upon internet speed.
- Repeat for each additional device you need to add. You do not need to wait for one to be finished before adding others.
Best Practices
- Always assign an Alias to each device to easily identify it later.
- Make sure to use the correct blueprint (NX-Station or NX-Handheld).
- Keep your subgroups organized by restaurant for efficient device management.
- Create subgroups under your subgroups for even more organization.
