Holding and Firing Menu Items in NX Restaurant
NX Restaurant allows servers to place menu items on hold—ringing and saving them without immediately sending them to the kitchen. This gives the server full control over when items are fired for preparation. Held items work with both printed prep tickets and KDS (Kitchen Display Systems).
What Does It Mean to Hold an Item?
- Holding an item allows it to be saved to the order but not immediately sent to the kitchen.
- This enables servers to pace courses or delay prep until a guest is ready.
- Items on hold will be visible on the order but won’t generate a prep ticket until fired.
Method 1: Using the Item Command
How to Place Items on Hold
Step 1: Ring Items as Usual
- Select and add menu items to the order.
Step 2: Select Items to Hold
- Tap the menu items you want to place on hold so they are highlighted.
Step 3: Tap the Hold Button
- With the items selected, tap the Hold command button from the Commands section.
- These items are now held and will not be sent to the kitchen until fired.
Step 4: Save the Order
- Tap the Back button to save the order and return to the your order access method.
How to Manually Fire Held Items
Step 1: Reopen the Order
- From the Floor Plan, Tab List, or Order List, open the saved order with held items.
Step 2: Select Items to Fire
- Tap menu items to highlight the held items you want to send to the kitchen. Ensure all items you wish to send are highlighted.
Step 3: Tap the Fire Button
- Tap the Fire command button in the Commands.
- Only the selected items will fire; any held items not selected will remain on hold.
Tip: If you forget to select all the items you want to fire together, they may send as separate prep tickets, potentially affecting kitchen timing.

How to Place Items on Hold
Step 1: Ring Items as Usual
- Select and add menu items to the order.
Step 2: Select the Hold Button
- Tap the Hold button in the bottom left corner, any unset items will be automatically held.
Step 3: Save the Order
- Tap the Back button to save the order and return to the your order access method.
How to Fire All Held Items
Step 1: Reopen the Order
- From the Floor Plan, Tab List, or Order List, open the saved order with held items.
Step 2: Tap the Send Button
- Tap the Send button in the bottom left corner, you will be prompted to confirm firing all held items. You will automatically be taken back to your order access method.
Note: You can combine using the Item Commands and Hold/Send Buttons based on your ordering needs.
