Setting Up a Printer or KDS Device in NX Restaurant
Getting Started
To begin, navigate to the Venue > Devices section in the left-hand sidebar and select Printers & KDS. This is your hub for managing all physical output devices.
1. Device Setup & Hardware
First, you’ll define what the printer is and what model you’re using.
- Name: Enter a descriptive name (e.g., Barista Printer or Guest Receipt Printer).
-
Type: Select the type of printer.
- Thermal Epson
- Impact Epson
- KDS
- Screen (Print jobs will display on the screen of the device.)
- Model: Choose the model (e.g., Epson tm m30iii).
- Serial # (optional): Enter the printer’s serial number for tracking purposes.
2. Interface Settings (The "How It Connects")
This is the most critical part of the setup. You need to tell NX how to find the printer on your network or at the station.
-
Interface: Select the interface used to communicate to the device.
-
Bluetooth
- Bluetooth ID: The Pairing ID of the connected device.
-
Cloud
- MAC Address: Specify the MAC address of the device for communication. This should be listed on the printer or included in a self test print out.
- Server Direct Printing: When toggled NX Restaurant will communicate directly with the printer. Configuration settings on the printer device must be set prior to turning this on.
-
Ethernet
- MAC Address: Specify the MAC address of the device for communication. This should be listed on the printer or included in a self test print out.
- IP Address: Specify the MAC address of the device for communication. It's best practice to use static IP addresses. IP Address is required if using an ethernet Escpos printer.
-
USB
- For more on setting up a USB device check out Setting Up a USB Thermal Printer.
-
Bluetooth
- POS Device: Choose the POS device this printer is connected to (e.g., Bar Station). This device will control all print jobs.
-
Backup Printer (Optional) Select a backup printer to automatically receive jobs if this printer is down or unreachable.
- Click Save.
3. Advanced Configuration
If you selected Escpos generic, you may see a Generic Printer Configuration section. This allows you to fine-tune the "look" of your printouts:
Paper Width: Usually 80mm for thermal or 70mm for impact.
Max Columns: Controls how much text fits on one line. Standard is usually 40-42.
Next Steps: Routing Your Print Jobs
Now that your physical device is "enrolled" in NX, you need to tell the system what to send to it:
For Kitchen/Bar Orders: Go to Configuration > Printing > Destinations to route specific categories (like Appetizers or Drinks) to this printer and the formatting options.
For Receipts: Go to Devices > POS Devices, select your terminal, and attach this printer as the "Receipt Printer."
