Sections of a Guest Receipt in NX Restaurant
In NX Restaurant, guest receipts are made up of multiple sections that display key details about the order, payment, and customer. The way these sections appear is controlled through configuration in the Printing Formats area of the NX Restaurant Portal, but this article focuses on how each section appears on the printed receipt itself.
Guest receipts typically contain a top section, a header section, a body section, and a bottom section, each displaying specific types of information.
1. Top Section
The top section of a receipt provides high-level details that help identify the order.
This area can include:
- Large Order Number – A prominently displayed order number printed in bold for easy visibility.
- Large Order Type – The order type (e.g., Dine In, To Go, Delivery) printed in large text next to the order number.
- Large Order Source – Identifies where the order originated (POS, Online Ordering, or Kiosk).
- Venue Details – Prints the venue name, and optionally the address and phone number, beneath the order information.
These details are configured under Receipt Settings – Top in the Printing Format Settings tab. To learn more visit Printing > Formats > Guest Receipt > Settings.
2. Header Section
The header section displays general check details and appears directly beneath the top section.
This area typically includes:
- Check Date and Time
- Order Number
- Table Name or Number
- Employee Name (Check Owner)
These items come from the Header Items configuration list in the Printing Format setup. To learn more visit Printing > Formats > Header and Footer Items.
📘 Example:
11/10 2:48 PM Order #27-1 Table P2 Brock K.
This section helps staff and guests identify when and where the order was placed and who handled it.
3. Body Section
The body section contains the seat items — the ordered food and beverage items along with any modifiers or details.
Depending on configuration, this section can display varying levels of detail:
- Seat Name – If enabled, each section of menu items begins with a seat name if it is manually named (e.g., “Bob”).
-
Seat Number Prefix – If seat number is enabled, each section begins with a seat label (e.g., “Share #”).
- Seat Number – If enabled, each section begins with a seat number (e.g., “1”).
- Menu Items – Items are listed with quantities and prices.
- Modifiers – Printed under the main item (e.g., “1 Beef Nacho ($3.50)”) depending on the modifier settings.
- Discounts – If enabled, applied discount name and discount totals can be displayed.
- Seat Details – Such as subtotal and remaining balance, shown when enabled in format settings.
Controlled under Receipt Settings – Body and Receipt Settings - Items & Modifiers options in Printing Formats. To learn more visit Printing > Formats > Guest Receipt > Settings.
If fewer details are preferred, subtotals and remaining balances can be hidden, resulting in a simpler format.
Additional ways to save paper:
- Items can also be set to consolidate making like items group together on the check.
- Set modifiers to "Wrap" instead of "List" so they take up less space.
4. Bottom Section
The bottom section displays check totals, payment information, and optional receipt messages.
This area can include:
- Gratuities and Fees – Any automatic gratuity or service charge applied to the check.
- Discounts – Line-item or total-level discounts.
- Subtotal and Tax – Summarized totals before and after taxes.
- Total and Balance Due – Final amount owed after payments or tips.
- Tip and Charity Lines – Lines for tip entry or round-up-for-charity prompts.
- QR Codes – Optional scannable codes for payment, feedback, or loyalty sign-up.
These settings are configured under Receipt Settings – Bottom, Tip Line, and QR Codes in Printing Formats. To learn more visit Printing > Formats > Guest Receipt > Settings.
Putting It All Together
Each section of the guest receipt is highly configurable, allowing venues to customize:
- Which data prints (and where)
- The level of item detail shown
- Whether branding or promotional elements like QR codes and loyalty prompts appear
By combining the Settings, Header Items, and Footer Items tabs within Configuration > Printing > Formats, venues can design receipts that fit their operational and customer needs.
