Learn how to troubleshoot menu items or modifiers not printing on guest receipts.
If a menu item or modifier is not printing on the guest receipt, there are several settings to check. Printing behavior is controlled both at the item level and through the receipt format settings. All relevant settings must allow printing for the item to appear on the guest check.
1. Verify the Item Setting
Each menu item or modifier includes an option to control whether it can print on a guest receipt.
- In the NX Restaurant Portal, go to Menus > Items.
- Select the item that is not printing.
- Go to the Options tab.
Under Receipt Options, confirm that Print on Guest Check is toggled on.
➡️ When this is enabled, the item is eligible to print on guest receipts.
2. Check the Default Receipt Format
The Formats under Configuration > Printing > Formats controls how and when items and modifiers appear on printed receipts. Formats get attached to each Area to customize receipt printing for different areas of the operation.
Key settings to review:
- Print $0 Menu Items / Print $0 Modifiers – Must be enabled if you want items or modifiers with no price to print.
- Print Charge Modifiers – Controls whether charge-based modifiers print.
- Roll Mod Price into Parent – If enabled, modifier prices are rolled into the parent item, which may prevent them from appearing separately on the receipt.
- Modifier Style (List, Wrapped, None) – Determines how modifiers appear visually on the receipt, if set to None the modifiers will not print.
If items or modifiers are not appearing, make sure that these format-level settings allow for printing based on your menu setup.
3. Ensure Settings Are Compatible
Both the item-level and format-level settings must allow printing.
For example:
- A modifier will not print if Print on Guest Check is on at the item level, but Print $0 Modifiers is off in the receipt format.
- Likewise, a $0 menu item will not print if the Print $0 Menu Items toggle is off, even if the item setting allows printing.
4. Save and Test
After making adjustments:
- Select Save to apply your changes.
- Ring in the item on the POS and print a test guest receipt to confirm the change.
