🖨️ How Printer Routing Works in NX
NX uses a flexible and reliable Printer Routing system to make sure your menu items print to the right place—even if your main printer goes down. Below is a breakdown of how it works.
1. Menu Items and Routing Groups
Menu Items in NX are assigned to a Routing Group.
Think of a Routing Group as a “bucket” that tells NX where this item should print (for example: Kitchen, Bar, Dessert Station).
2. Routing Destinations
Each Routing Group can contain one or more Routing Destinations.
A Routing Destination is made up of:
- Configuration options (rules for how printing behaves)
- A Destination Device (the actual printer the item should print to)
3. Re-Route Printers (Optional)
A Routing Destination can have an optional Re-Route Printer.
- If the Destination Device isn’t reachable, NX will automatically try the Re-Route Printer.
- This is useful if you want a backup path for specific destinations.
4. Backup Printers
Each Printer Device can also have its own Backup Printer.
- If the intended printer fails, NX will attempt to print to its Backup Printer.
- This acts as another layer of protection to keep orders flowing smoothly.
5. Last Resort: Local POS Printer
If all else fails—meaning:
- The Destination Device is not reachable, and
- There is no Re-Route Printer, or the Re-Route Printer is also unreachable, and
- The Destination Device has no Backup Printer (or the Backup is also unavailable)
➡️ NX will send the print job to the Local POS Printer attached to the POS device where the order was entered.
This ensures there is always a “last resort” printer available, so nothing gets completely lost.
Key Takeaways
Menu Items → Routing Groups → Routing Destinations → Destination Device. Optional Re-Route Printers and Backup Printers provide failover paths. If everything else fails, NX always falls back to the Local POS Printer.
✅ With NX’s Printer Routing, your restaurant can rely on a layered safety net to keep tickets printing where they’re needed—even when technical issues arise.
