Customizing Your Guest Flow: Setting Up Tip Suggestions 💳💰
Providing clear, predefined tip options simplifies the checkout experience for your guests and helps maximize your service staff's gratuity earnings. With NX Restaurant, you can configure Tip Suggestions to automatically calculate and print on physical guest receipts, display on customer-facing screens, or prompt on handheld payment terminals (like the Pax A35 series).
⚙️ Where Tip Suggestions Display
Depending on your venue's hardware layout, your configured options will appear in three key areas:
Physical Receipts: Printed cleanly at the bottom of the customer copy below the total.
Guest-Facing Displays: Prompted dynamically on stationary countertop monitors facing the guest.
Screen-Based Payment Devices: Displayed as interactive, touch-selectable options during the card dipping or tapping step on handheld terminals.
🛠️ Configuration Step 1: Base Suggestions (Standard Orders)
To establish your venue's standard tip percentages, you must configure your specific service areas:
Navigate to Configuration > Areas in the NX Portal and select an area (e.g., Dine In).
Tap the Receipts tab from the top navigation slider.
Scroll down to the Tips Suggestions configuration card.
Choose Your Method: Select Percent (recommended) or Amount. You can also choose Smart or None.
Set Your Base: Choose whether the system should calculate the tip based on the Subtotal (before tax) or the Total (after tax).
Input Gratuity Tiers: Define your three standard options (e.g., 18.00%, 20.00%, and 22.00%).
Click Save.
🧮 Configuration Step 2: Automatic Gratuity Exceptions
What happens if an order already has a large party service charge or an automatic auto-gratuity applied to it? To prevent your guests from accidentally double-tipping full percentages on top of an existing service fee, configure the Automatic Gratuity Tip Suggestions section directly below your base settings:
The Logic: If an auto-gratuity is already present on the check, the base tips section is hidden. Instead, this secondary section overrides it to suggest a smaller, supplemental amount (e.g., 3.00%, 5.00%, or 7.00%), typically labeled as "Suggested Additional Tip".
🔌 Configuration Step 3: Using Your Tip Suggestions
Once you've configured your Tip Suggestions, you then need to put them to use. There are 3 ways to get your Tip Suggestions in front of your customers:
Tip Suggestions on Guest Facing Displays: What Guests See: Guest Display Tip Suggestions
Tip Suggestions on Printed Receipts & CC Vouchers: Printing the Layout: Adding Tip Suggestions to Your Receipts & Vouchers
Tip Suggestions on compatible Payment Devices: Going Digital: Enabling Tip Suggestions on Screen-Based Payment Devices

Where will Tip Suggestions be displayed?
Tip Suggestions will be displayed automatically on NX6 Devices configured for Guest Payment and all NX Guest Facing Displays.
Tip Suggestions can also be printed on receipts and credit card vouchers. Additionally, Tip Suggestions can also be prompted on screen-equipped Payment Devices, such as the Pax A3x series.
Can I display customized text above the options?
Yes. Use the Label field in the portal (e.g., entering "Tip suggestions" or "Thank our kitchen crew!"). This custom string will print directly above the calculation matrix on your receipts.
Is it better to base tips on the Subtotal or the Total?
Basing suggestions on the Subtotal calculates the tip strictly on food and beverage costs before sales taxes are added. Basing it on the Total includes sales tax in the calculation. Check with your regional restaurant association to match local industry expectations.
