Price Point Setup in NX Restaurant
Overview
A Price Point is a named pricing configuration that controls how a menu item is priced when it's rung up on the POS. Instead of setting a single static price directly on an item, Price Points give you a flexible, reusable way to define how an item is priced — whether that's a fixed dollar amount, an open (staff-entered) price, or a weight-based price.
Â
Think of a Price Point as a pricing rule that you create once and apply across as many items as you need.
Common use cases include:
- Offering different prices for the same item depending on time of day (e.g., Happy Hour pricing vs. regular pricing)
- Setting up items that are sold by weight (e.g., bulk foods, seafood)
- Creating open-priced items where staff enter the price at the time of sale
- Applying a discount automatically whenever a specific price point is used
- Controlling which price applies to parent items vs. modifier items
- Setting different prices based on Prep Modifier (No, Add, Extra, etc.)
Key Concept: Price Points Must Be Added to a Menu Set
Important: A Price Point must be included in a Menu Set to be available for ringing on the POS. Simply creating a Price Point and assigning it to a menu item is not enough — if the Price Point isn't part of an active Menu Set, it won't appear or function at the POS.
This two-step relationship works like this:
- Create the Price Point — define its name, behavior, and settings in Menus > Price Points
- Add it to a Menu Set — include the Price Point in the relevant Menu Set so it becomes active on the POS
- Assign it to Menu Items — apply the Price Point to individual items (parent items, modifier items, or both)
Creating a Price Point
Navigate to Portal > Menus > Price Points and click Add.
General Tab
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Name | The name of the Price Point as it will appear on the POS. Make this clear and recognizable (e.g., "Happy Hour," "Market Price," "By the Pound"). |
| Time Range | Optionally restrict when this Price Point is available by linking it to a defined Time Range. Leave blank for all-day availability. |
Printing & Display
Note: If the price point is used in conjunction with a Prep Mod, only setup print options on the Prep Mod or Price Point not both to prevent double printing instructions.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Display on Receipts | Toggle on to show this Price Point on printed/displayed receipts. |
| Receipt Name | Custom name to use on receipts. If left blank, the Price Point's Name is used. |
| Receipt Position | Choose whether the Price Point label appears before (Prepend) or after (Append) the item name on the receipt. |
| Display on Chits | Toggle on to show this Price Point on kitchen/bar chits. |
| Chit Name | Custom name for chits. If blank, the Price Point's Name is used. |
| Chit Position | Choose whether the Price Point label appears before (Prepend) or after (Append) the item name on the chit. |
Options
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Active | When enabled, this Price Point is live and evaluated by the POS. Disable to temporarily take it out of rotation without deleting it. |
| Prompt | When enabled, staff or guests are prompted to select or confirm this price option during ordering. |
| Open | When enabled, the POS will prompt the user to manually enter a price at the time of sale. Useful for market-priced or variable-cost items. |
| Weight Based | When enabled, the price is calculated based on item weight. A tare weight can also be associated with the item. |
Application
Controls whether this Price Point applies to Parent Items, Modifier Items, or Both.
- Parent Items — applies only to top-level menu items
- Modifier Items — applies only to modifiers (add-ons, substitutions, etc.)
- Both — applies to all item types (default)
Required Price Points
Use this field to define any prerequisite Price Points that must be present on the order for this Price Point to apply. (This is commonly used for pricing matrix scenarios such as pizza sizes with toppings.)
Discount
Link a Discount to this Price Point. The selected discount will automatically apply to any menu item that is rung using this Price Point — no separate discount action needed by staff.
Adding a Price Point to a Menu Set
Once your Price Point is created, it needs to be included in a Menu Set before it will be active on the POS.
- Go to Portal > Menus > Menu Sets
- Open the relevant Menu Set
- Add the Price Point to the Menu Set's configuration
- Save
Only Price Points included in the active Menu Set will be available for ringing.
Assigning a Price Point to a Menu Item
Price Points are assigned at the individual menu item level.
- Go to Portal > Menus > Items
- Open the item you want to configure
- Navigate to the Price Points section of the item
- Add the applicable Price Point(s) and set the price for each
- Save
You can assign multiple Price Points to a single item — for example, a "Regular Price" and a "Happy Hour" price on the same item.
Practical Tips
- Name clearly. Price Point names show on the POS, so use names that make sense to your staff at a glance (e.g., "Happy Hour," "Brunch Special," "By Weight").
- Use Time Ranges to automatically activate and deactivate pricing periods without manual intervention.
- Don't forget the Menu Set step. This is the most common setup miss — a Price Point won't ring if it's not in the Menu Set.
- Use the Discount field to bundle automatic discounts into a pricing tier instead of relying on staff to apply them manually.
- Weight Based pricing pairs with the item's tare weight setting to give you accurate per-unit pricing for bulk or portioned items.
