Enabling and Configuring Positions in NX Restaurant
Positions in NX Restaurant allow servers to assign specific seat position numbers to ordered items. This is particularly useful in full-service environments to ensure food runners and kitchen staff know which guest ordered which item. When paired with position-aware printing, it helps streamline service and reduce errors.
What Are Positions?
When Positions are enabled, position numbers are auto-generated based on the guest count input when an order is started at a table. Each menu item can be assigned to a position number, allowing staff to accurately identify which guest receives what dish.
There are three key features related to Positions:
- Enable Positions – Turns on position tracking for an area.
- Enable Sharing – Allows a menu item to be assigned to multiple position numbers (e.g., Pos1 and Pos2 are sharing a NY Steak).
- Enable Whole Table Position – Allows a shared item to be assigned to a “whole table” instead of an individual seat. You can customize the label for this.
- Common examples: COT (Center of Table) POS0, 0 Shared, Table, For Table
Step 1: Enable Positions in the Area
- Go to Configuration > Areas.
- Select the Area you want to configure (e.g., Dining Room).
- Scroll to Position Options.
- Toggle Enable Positions ON.
- (Optional) Toggle Enable Sharing if shared dishes are used.
- (Optional) Toggle Enable Whole Table Position and set a custom label.
- Click Save.
Step 2: Configure Position Printing Behavior
- Go to Configuration > Printing > Formats.
- Scroll to the Coursing & Positions section.
- Set Group Items By to either:
- Position – Groups items by position (seat number) on the ticket.
- Course – Groups by course name (e.g., Appetizer, Entree).
- Toggle ON Print position as modifier if you want the position number to appear alongside the item as a modifier.
- (Optional) Set Sort Items By to Position or Course, depending on kitchen or bar workflow preferences.
- Click Save.
Use Case Example
In a table-service restaurant, a server starts an order for a table with 4 guests:
- Guest 1 orders a burger
- Guest 2 orders pasta
- Guest 3 and Guest 4 are sharing nachos
With positions and sharing enabled:
- The burger is assigned to Position 1
- The pasta is assigned to Position 2
- The nachos are assigned to both Positions 3 and 4
The kitchen receives a ticket that clearly displays who gets what, reducing confusion and ensuring prompt and accurate service.
Positioning is a powerful feature in NX Restaurant that enhances the precision of service. When combined with clear printing rules, it can dramatically improve kitchen efficiency and the guest experience. Be sure to test your print setup after making changes to ensure it matches your operational workflow.
