Enabling Coursing in NX Restaurant
Coursing allows menu items to be grouped and fired based on the order in which they should be prepared and served. This structured workflow is especially useful in full-service dining environments, improving communication between front-of-house and kitchen teams.
1. Create Named Courses
To start, create the list of courses you’d like to use:
- Go to Configuration > Menus > Courses
- Click + New Enter a course name (examples below) and save
Common course naming formats:
- Course 1, Course 2, Course 3, Course 4, etc.
- Apps, Soup/Salad, Entrees, Desserts
- Starters, Mains, Desserts
- Out First, As Ready
- Bag 1, Bag 2, Bag 3, etc.
These names will be used for assigning menu items to the appropriate course.
2. Enable Coursing by Area
Next, turn on coursing in the relevant service Areas:
- Go to Configuration > Areas
- Select the Area (e.g., Dining Room) where coursing should apply
- Under Coursing Options, toggle Enable Coursing to ON
đŸ’¡ Why Area-level control? Different service zones like the bar or patio may not require coursing. Area-specific configuration allows for flexible workflows.
3. Configure Coursing for Printing & KDS
Finally, set how coursing (and optionally, positions) appear on printouts or kitchen display systems:
- Go to Configuration > Printing > Formats
Under Coursing & Positions, choose how to:
- Group Items By (e.g., Position, Course)
- Print course as modifier or position as modifier
- Sort Items By (for consistent print order)
đŸ“Œ Tip: You can configure different formatting for different print jobs or devices (e.g., expo vs. grill printer).
