Configuring Menu Items: The Options Tab in the NX Restaurant Portal
Â
The Options tab in the Menu Item setup provides advanced controls that affect how a menu item behaves in the POS. These settings help tailor how the item prints, is priced, displayed, and managed across a variety of use cases.
Â
Accessing the Options Tab
To configure Options for a menu item:
- Go to Configuration > Menus > Items.
- Select or create a menu item.
- Click the Options tab.

Options Tab Sections and Settings
Â
Receipt Options
Print on Guest Check: When enabled, the item will appear on printed guest receipts. By default any item that charges a price will display automatically.Â
Include in Item Price: When enabled and the item is used as a modifier, its price will roll into the parent item’s price instead of being listed separately.
Â
Guest Handling
Guest Count: Set the number by which the guest count should increase when the item is ordered (commonly used for cover tracking). This is only used when the Increment Method in the Area is set for Menu item increment.
Â
Effective Time
Effective Time: Assign a time range to restrict the availability of the item. Time ranges must be predefined in the system.
Time ranges are configured in Configuration > Time Ranges in the NX Restaurant Portal.
Â
Quantity Options
Default Quantity: Enter a default quantity for the item when it is added to an order.Â
Prompt Quantity: Enable this to require a quantity input each time the item is rung in.Â
Predefined Quantity Only: When enabled, only preset quantity values will be allowed—useful for streamlined POS workflows or controlled quantity ordering.Â
Quantity Values: Define the preset quantity values available if Predefined Quantity is enabled. Select the purple + icon button to set the Name and Value.
Â
Appearance
Button Color: Set the background color of the item’s button in the POS.Â
Text Color: Choose the text color that will display on the POS button.Â
Icon: Select a visual icon to help users quickly recognize the item.
Â
Beverage Requirements
Beverage requirement controls are set as permissions on a Job and each menu item can be set to either require or satisfy a beverage.
Beverages Required: Set how many beverages this item requires to be added to fulfill a required drink rule. Beverages Satisfied: Set how many beverage requirements this item satisfies when ordered (e.g., combo meals).
