Configuring Menu Items: The Routing Tab in the NX Restaurant Portal
The Routing tab in the Menu Items configuration section of the NX Restaurant portal controls where items print or display remotely, such as on kitchen display systems (KDS) or remote order printers.
Routing configurations are crucial for optimizing kitchen operations, organizing production flow, and managing how modifiers behave in relation to their parent items.
How to Navigate to the Routing Tab
- Go to Configuration from the left-hand menu.
- Expand the Menus section, then click Items.
- Select or create a menu item.
- Navigate to the Routing tab to access and modify the settings.
Routing Settings
Routing Group
Defines the destination for remote printing or display.
You must first create Routing Groups under Configuration > Printing > Routing > Groups. The selected Routing Group determines the default destination for the item. This default can be overridden by routing settings in the selected Area.
Priority
- Controls the printing sequence of items when using a routing format.
- Items with a lower priority number print earlier.
- Useful for grouping similar items or setting a logical print order.
Cook Time
- Sets the estimated preparation time for the item.
- This value is used by the KDS to manage timing and staging. Format is HH:MM (e.g., 00:10 for 10 minutes).
Modifier Routing Controls
These toggle options are relevant only if the item is used as a modifier:
Follow Parent
When enabled, the modifier follows the routing of the item it is attached to. Recommended for modifiers that should appear with their main item.
Redirect Parent
When enabled, the modifier’s routing will override the parent item’s routing. Useful when a modifier changes how or where the main item is prepared (e.g., changing a protein could route to a different station).
Additional Routing Options
Display Price
If enabled, the price of the item will be shown on remote chits (e.g., kitchen tickets).
Include in KDS Summary
- When enabled, the item (main or modifier) is included in the summary view on kitchen displays.
- Helpful for kitchen staff to quickly verify order content without expanding each item.
Summary
The Routing tab ensures items are sent to the right place at the right time and appear properly on kitchen and prep displays. These configurations help streamline back-of-house operations and improve order accuracy.
🔧 Tip: Make sure your Routing Groups and Routing Formats are fully set up before assigning them to menu items.
