Configuring Menu Items: The General Tab in the NX Restaurant Portal

The General tab in the Menus > Items section of the NX Restaurant portal allows you to configure the core name, pricing, and identification settings for a menu item.

How to Access the General Tab

• From the NX Restaurant portal, go to the Configuration section in the sidebar.
• Select Menus > Items.
• Choose an existing item from the list or click + New to create a new menu item.
• The General tab will be selected by default when the item editor opens.

Configuring Item Information

Menu Item Settings

POS Name (Required) 

Enter the name of the item as it will display in the POS and reporting. 

Guest Name 

This name appears on guest-facing receipts, order displays, and online ordering. 

Chit Name 

This version of the item name appears on remote kitchen chits or KDS screens. 

Prompt Keyboard

Enable this toggle to allow the employee to manually type in a name at the time of ordering.

Note: If the Guest Name or Chit Name fields are left blank, they will automatically use the POS Name as the default.

Integration & Tagging

Integration ID 

Use this for mapping the item with third-party integrations or inventory platforms. 

Barcode 

Enter a scannable barcode value for the item, if applicable. 

Tag 

Apply an optional tag to categorize or label the item for filtering or display purposes.

Pricing

Default Menu Item Price 

Enter the standard price of the item. This price is used unless overridden by specific price points or rules. 

Default Modifier Price 

Define the price applied to any modifiers added to the item. This price will only be used if no price points are defined.

Weight Based 

Toggle this on if the item is sold by weight. This will activate additional configuration options related to scales and tare weights.

Price Points

This section allows you to define alternate prices for the item based on different conditions, such as happy hour or lunch specials. 

Each price point has:

• A Name (e.g., Happy Hour)
• A Price (e.g., $14.00)

To add a price point:

• Click the purple + button.
• Select or enter the price point name.
• Enter the corresponding price.

Note: You can create and manage price points by going to Configuration > Menus > Price Points.

Saving Your Changes

When all fields are set:

• Click Save to commit the changes.
• Or click Cancel to discard any edits.
