Configuring Menu Categories in the NX Restaurant Portal
Menu Categories in NX Restaurant are used to organize Menu Items into logical groups for ordering across the POS, Kiosk, and Online Ordering platforms. Think of categories as sections of a menu — for example, Sandwiches, Sides, Bar, or Beer.
Each Menu Category can contain Menu Items directly and can also reference other categories as Sub Categories for additional organization. Even when using Sub Categories, Menu Items can still be assigned to the top-level category.
Accessing Menu Categories
Navigate to:
Configuration > Menus > Categories
From this screen, you can create a new category or edit an existing one.
Tab Overview
1. General
Name: (Required) The name of the category, displayed on the POS and Online Ordering interfaces.
Sub Categories: (Optional) Select existing categories to nest beneath this category for advanced menu organization. Items may still be assigned to the main category directly.
Additional settings (within General tab):
- Default Price Point: (Optional) Select a price point to apply to all Menu Items in this category.
- Display Price: (Optional) Toggle on to show the price of the Menu Item on the category button (e.g., for kiosks).
- Button Color / Text Color: (Optional) Customize the appearance of the category button by choosing your preferred colors.
- Icon: (Optional) Select an icon to visually represent this category.
- Description: (Optional) Enter a description to display on guest-facing pages, such as Online Ordering menus.
2. Menu Items
Sort Method: Choose how Menu Items are ordered within the category (e.g., Custom, Alphabetical).
Menu Items: Add individual Menu Items to this category and optionally override their price at the category level.
3. Menu Item Defaults
Define default settings that will apply to Menu Items in this category:
- Sales Category
- Routing Group
- Tax Group
- Price
- Modifier Price
- Modifiers: Add default modifiers that will be included on all items in the category. You may still set additional modifier options directly on the menu item as well.
4. Images
Upload visual assets for guest-facing systems:
Main Image: Displayed prominently in interfaces such as kiosks or online menus. Thumbnail: A smaller image variation used where appropriate.
