Configuring Areas: Order Routing Tab in NX Restaurant Portal
The Order Routing tab allows operators to override default routing configurations and customize how orders are sent to kitchen display systems (KDS) or remote printers for a specific area. This is useful when different service areas—like dine-in, patio, or to-go—require unique routing logic compared to the venue’s default setup.
What Is Order Routing?
Order routing determines where and how items are sent for preparation once an order is placed. Routing destinations can include:
- Kitchen printers
- Remote prep stations
- KDS screens
By default, routing is defined globally in Configuration → Printing → Routing → Groups. However, the Order Routing tab allows for area-specific overrides.
When to Use Area-Based Routing
Use this tab only when:
A particular area needs to send orders to a different printer or KDS than the default Routing behavior should change during different time periods (e.g., late-night service or to-go hours)
🔄 If no routing is configured at the area level, the system will fall back to the global routing rules.
How to Configure Order Routing for an Area
- Go to Configuration → Areas
- Select an existing area or create a new one
- Click the Order Routing tab
- Click the purple + button to add a routing rule
Each routing rule contains the following fields:
Routing Group
Select the routing group you want to override. This is the set of rules that defines which items should be routed where (e.g., food vs. bar items).
📦 These groups are created and managed under Configuration > Printing > Routing > Groups
Time Range
Assign an optional time range to activate the routing only during specific hours (e.g., Late Night, Happy Hour). If no time range is selected, the override applies at all times.
Destinations
Choose the routing destination(s) that will receive the order items—such as Kitchen Impact, Local Printer, or KDS. These destinations replace the default ones defined for the routing group.
Saving Changes
After making any updates, select Save in the lower right corner to apply the changes. Use Cancel to discard edits and return to the job list.
