Prep Modifiers (or "Prep Mods") are a small but mighty feature in NX Restaurant that help streamline kitchen communication. Think of them as the "how" for your modifiers—instead of just saying "Cheese," a Prep Mod allows you to say Add Cheese, No Cheese, or Cheese On Side.
What are Prep Modifiers?
Prep Modifiers provide specific instructions for a modifier selection. Common examples include:
Add
Extra
No
On Side
Sub
By using these, you ensure the kitchen knows exactly how to handle a guest's request without needing extra typed-out notes.
Creating and Editing Prep Modifiers
Navigate to Configuration > Menus > Modifiers > Prep Modifiers in the left-hand menu.
To create a new one: Click the + New button in the bottom right corner.
To edit an existing one: Simply click the name of the Prep Mod from the list.
Key Settings
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Name | The name displayed on the POS, KDS (Kitchen Display System), and guest-facing receipts. |
| Type | Choose between Add, Remove, or Substitute. These are primarily used for third-party integrations and reporting. |
| Display Method | Determines how the text appears on a remote ticket. Options include Prepend (Before the item), Append (After the item), or None. |
| Pricing | You can set this to No Price, use the Item Default Price, or assign a specific Price Point (like a flat $0.50 "Add" charge). |
| Appearance | Customize the Background and Foreground (Text) colors to make specific mods (like "NO") pop on the KDS. |
Linking Prep Modifiers
Once you’ve created your Prep Mods, you need to tell the system where they should appear. You can link them in two main ways:
1. Prep Groups
Prep Groups are used for included item modifiers. For example, if a burger comes with lettuce and tomato, a Prep Group allows a server to quickly toggle between "No," "On Side," or "Extra" for those specific ingredients.
Go to Modifiers > Prep Groups.
Select your group and move the desired Prep Modifiers from the Available column to the Selected column.
2. Modifier Categories
This is how you control which instructions appear when a server long-presses a modifier on the POS.
Go to Modifiers > Modifier Categories.
Select a category (e.g., "Brunch Mods").
Under the Prep Mods dropdown, check or uncheck the instructions you want to be available for that category.
Pro Tip: Use high-contrast colors for Prep Mods like "NO" or "SUB" (e.g., a bright red background) to help your kitchen staff spot changes instantly on the KDS!
