Understanding Prep Modifier Pricing
"Prep Modifiers" (or Prep Mods) are the little instructions that make a big difference—think of them as the "No," "Add," or "Sub" that tells the kitchen exactly how to prep a dish.
But sometimes, those instructions come with a cost. Whether you’re charging extra for a "Sub Gluten-Free Bun" or ensuring "No Onions" stays free, the Pricing section in your Prep Mod settings gives you total control.
Here is a breakdown of the four pricing methods available in the NX Restaurant platform.
1. No Price
This is your most common setting. When No Price is selected, the system will never attach a dollar amount to this specific prep modifier, regardless of which item it is paired with.
Best For: Standard instructions like "No Onions," "Extra Napkins," or "Cut in Half."
Result: The guest sees the instruction on their receipt, but the price is $0.00.
2. Item Default Price
This option pulls the price directly from the Default Price field of the menu item itself.
How it works: If you are modifying a burger with "Sub Chicken Breast," and the Chicken Breast item in your database is priced at $5.00, selecting this option will pull that $5.00 price tag.
Result: The price is dynamic based on the item being used as the modifier.
3. Item Mod Price
Every menu item in NX has a specific field for Default Mod Price. This is often different from the "a la carte" price of an item.
How it works: If a side of Avocado costs $3.00 on its own, but you only want to charge $1.50 when it's added inside a sandwich, you would set the Avocado's "Default Mod Price" to $1.50. Choosing Item Mod Price on your "Add" prep mod ensures the system looks at that specific "Mod" rate.
Result: Allows for discounted or specific "add-on" pricing.
4. Price Point
This is the "Advanced Mode" of prep mod pricing. It uses a specific Price Point set that must match the price point assigned to the menu item.
How it works: If you have complex pricing (e.g., "Small," "Medium," and "Large" upgrade costs), you can assign a Price Point to the prep mod. When the mod is selected, the system looks at the menu item to see which price matches that specific point.
Result: Maximum flexibility for restaurants with tiered pricing structures.
Quick Comparison Table

| Item Mod Price | The item's specific "Mod" price field. | Standardized add-on charges. |
| Price Point | A specific assigned pricing tier. | Tiered upgrades (Small/Med/Large). |
Pro Tip: Remember that Prep Mod Pricing requires NX App 1.6.1+. If you don't see these changes reflecting on your POS, double-check that your app version is up to date!
