All NX devices (NX6, NX15 & NX21) are controlled via our Mobile Device Management tool called Esper.
Esper allows us to "lock down" a NX device into using a single app. This is referred to as Kiosk Mode.
From time to time, certain functions may require you to take an NX Device out of Kiosk Mode for maintenance.
⚠️ Note: NX App updates do not require you to take the NX Device out of Kiosk Mode. In fact, when the NX App is updated, and the Device is in Kiosk Mode, the App will automatically relaunch with the updates.
Taking a Device OUT of Kiosk Mode
From the Esper console, select Devices & Groups and locate your device. Searching for the serial number is often the easiest way.
Once you've located your Device, select Settings from the top bar
Scroll down to Quick Actions and locate Device Mode
You'll see the current mode of the Device.
If the Device is in Kiosk Mode, you'll see a button that says Switch to Multi-App Mode along with the current Kiosk App that is running.
Click on Switch to Multi-App Mode.
A pop-up will appear allowing you to control the Device Mode:
Select Multi-app mode and press OK
The device will now transition to Multi-app Mode and the NX App will stop running. You'll now see the Android OS homepage with the NX Restaurant logo on the device.
Placing a Device into Kiosk Mode
The NX App is designed to run in Kiosk Mode. You should always have production devices configured to run Kiosk mode to prevent unexpected issues with the NX App.
Follow the same steps as Taking a Device OUT of Kiosk Mode to get to the Quick Actions section.
Click on Switch to Kiosk Mode
The Device Mode popup will appear.
Select Kiosk mode from the options, and then select NX Restaurant as the app to run.
Then press OK.
Within a few moments, the NX App will launch on the Device, and the Device will be in Kiosk Mode.
🛠️ Troubleshooting Steps
- Only NX Support Partners have access to Esper. If you're unfamiliar with Esper, please reach out to your NX Support Partner and they can assist you. Or contact us for help.
- Your NX Device must be connected to the Internet for these commands to take effect. If the Device is not connected to the internet, get it connected before proceeding.
- If you do not see the changes take effect promptly, confirm you have internet access on the device.
- Esper's device connectivity status is not always accurate. Esper may show a device as Last seen < 30 mins but the device may not currently be connected to the internet.
