Configuring Menu Items: The Reporting Tab in the NX Restaurant Portal
The Reporting tab in the Menu Item setup allows you to define how a menu item is classified for sales reporting, filtering, and operational triggers. Setting these classifications properly is important for ensuring accurate financials, reporting insights, and workflow automation in the venue.
How to Access the Reporting Tab
- Go to Configuration > Menus > Items.
- Select an existing item or create a new one.
- Click the Reporting tab.
Reporting Tab Fields
Sales Category (Required)
Defines where this item’s sales are attributed in sales reports. Example categories: Food, Alcohol, Merchandise, Service.
đź’ˇ Note: Sales Categories must be created in Financial > Sales Categories before assigning them here.
Type (Optional)
Classification label that can be used on guest-facing receipts. Commonly used for expense categorization such as Food, Beverage, Alcohol, etc.
Meal Stage (Optional)
Assigns the item to a course or meal stage, such as: Starter, Entree, Dessert. When used, this helps the POS or KDS system update the table’s meal status accordingly.
Venue Alert (Optional)
When enabled, the item will trigger a Venue Alert to any configured recipients. Use for high-priority items like age-restricted alcohol or special orders that require manager attention or staff coordination.
Use Cases
- Sales Category helps break down revenue in reporting by major product groups.
- Type can support expense tracking or split receipt types.
- Meal Stage integrates with coursing and meal status updates for smoother service.
- Venue Alerts enhance operational awareness for key items.
Best Practices
- Always assign a Sales Category for every menu item.
- Use Type and Meal Stage if your reporting, prep, or service flow benefits from further item classification.
- Set up Venue Alerts sparingly to avoid notification fatigue—only for items that truly require special attention.
