๐งฎ Order Rounding in NX
๐ Overview
Order Rounding in NX allows a venue to round guest order totals to a predefined increment for simpler cash handling and cleaner guest totals ๐ต. Rounding is applied after taxes are calculated and is treated as a settlement adjustment โ not a change to item prices or taxable sales.
Order Rounding is configured per Area and applies to all orders started in that Area.
๐ฏ Supported Rounding Increments
NX supports rounding order totals to the nearest:
- $0.05
- $0.10
- $0.25
- $0.50
- $1.00
The rounding increment is selected in the Area โ Accounting settings.
โ๏ธ Where Order Rounding Is Configured
Order Rounding is configured at the Area level:
Configuration โ Areas โ [Area] โ Accounting
๐ Each Area can have its own rounding behavior, allowing different service types (Dine In, Bar, Takeout, etc.) to follow different rounding rules.
๐ How Order Rounding Works
- All items, fees, discounts, and taxes are calculated normally
- The system calculates the true final total
- NX applies the configured rounding rule
- The difference is stored as a Rounding amount
๐ช Seat-Level First, Then Check-Level
- Rounding is calculated and stored at the Seat level
- Seat rounding amounts are rolled up to the Check level
- This ensures correct behavior when checks are split by seat
๐ Guest Transparency
When Order Rounding is applied:
- A โRoundingโ line appears on the guest receipt ๐งพ
- The rounding amount (positive or negative) is clearly shown
- The Total reflects the rounded amount
No surprises for the guest ๐
๐ Reporting Behavior
๐ Rounding on Reports
- Rounding appears as a separate Rounding line where applicable
- Visible on financial and tax-related reports
๐ซ What Rounding Does Not Do
- โ Does not alter sales
- โ Does not alter taxable revenue
- โ Does not change item prices
Your reporting stays clean and accurate
๐งพ Tax Treatment of Rounding
โ Rounding Is Not Taxed
NX follows the industry-standard approach:
- Taxes are calculated on the actual price of goods sold
- Rounding is applied after tax
- The rounding difference itself is not taxable
- If your tax jurisdiction requires charging of sales tax on rounding adjustments, do not use this feature and contact your NX Partner for additional options.
๐ Why This Is the Correct Approach
This approach aligns with modern POS systems and tax authority guidance across multiple regions (๐จ๐ฆ Canada, ๐ฆ๐บ Australia, ๐ช๐บ Eurozone).
Tax authorities treat rounding as a payment settlement issue, not a pricing change.
๐ The Standard Approach: Post-Tax Rounding
Post-Tax Rounding (Used by NX)
- Calculate subtotal
- Calculate all applicable taxes
- Determine the true final total
- Apply rounding to the configured increment
- Record the rounding difference separately
๐ค Why NX Uses Post-Tax Rounding
- โ Maintains tax compliance
- โ Preserves accurate sales reporting
- โ Ensures guest transparency
- โ Matches real-world cash handling
- โ Avoids tax calculation distortions
