Flexible Order Workflows with Jobs and Areas in NX Restaurant
Every restaurant operates a little differently, but all share common needs when it comes to ringing in and managing orders. At its core, that’s exactly what a POS system is designed to do—manage orders efficiently and flexibly.
For example:
Do you seat guests at tables, or do they seat themselves? If guests seat themselves, do you use table tent numbers, call out order numbers, or send text notifications when orders are ready? Do you offer dine-in and takeout service from the same location?
All of these different workflows require a system that can adapt to your operation’s needs—even within the same business. NX Restaurant enables that flexibility through the use of Jobs and Areas.
Jobs
Every employee or generic user logs in to NX Restaurant using a specific Job. Jobs define user-specific permissions and functionality, such as:
- What the user can or cannot do
- Ordering functions specific to their role
- Cash handling rules
Jobs are assigned to employee profiles by managers or system administrators. This setup ensures that employees only access features and workflows relevant to their responsibilities.
Areas
Areas control how orders are handled within the POS system, including:
- Order access (e.g., Floor Plan, Order List, Tab List, etc.)
- Available menus
- Reporting classifications
- Guest receipts
- Order routing
- Order options
- Allowed payment tenders and discounts
By default, an Area is set at the station level, meaning the POS device itself determines the active Area. This is useful for locations where multiple employees work in different service zones—like a bar versus a dining room—while sharing the same Job configuration.
Alternatively, you can configure a Job to always use a specific Area. In this case, the Job setting overrides the station’s default Area. If a Job doesn’t specify an Area, the system will use the Area assigned to the station where the employee is logged in.
In addition to automatic assignment, Areas can also be manually changed:
- Tap the Area/Order Type chip at the top of the order screen.
- Or, tap the three dots in the order header to open the Order Commands menu, then choose a different Area.
This manual flexibility is helpful when employees handle multiple service styles (e.g., dine-in and takeout) from the same device/job.
