The Guest Ordering Experience 🛒
-
Attract Screen & Accessibility Options:
Step 1 — The kiosk sits on an eye-catching idle screen with your venue's custom background, branding, or rotating guest display slideshow until a guest taps to begin.
Small corner icons allow guests to toggle high-contrast display modes, enlarge touch targets, or select their preferred language. -
Browsing Categories & Menu Items:
Step 2 — Guests easily tap through your menu categories and item tiles. Out-of-stock items display as unavailable (or are hidden based on your display settings), while low-stock items display a friendly "N left" chip. -
Customizing Items & Modifiers:
Step 3 — When selecting an item, guests choose their size or price point and select their modifier options.
— Modifier Limits: Required minimums and maximums are clearly displayed so guests know how many choices to make.
— Multiple Selections: If a modifier group allows multiples of the same item (e.g., two extra orders of bacon), tapping an option again adds another, displaying a small quantity badge on the tile.
— Special Instructions: If enabled, guests can type a custom note (like allergy requests or "no onions") in the special instructions field.
-
Cart Review & Payment:
Step 4 — Guests review their full order summary—including itemized totals, taxes, and applied discounts. They can type in promo codes, sign in to redeem loyalty rewards, and select their payment method (credit card, gift card, or saved account cards if permitted). -
Order Confirmation:
Step 5 — The screen displays a large order confirmation number, your store logo, and an optional SMS prompt where guests can enter their phone number to receive a text when their order is ready!
Managing Inactive Sessions ⏱️
- The kiosk waits quietly through your set Inactivity Timeout period.
- An "Are you still there?" prompt pops up with a countdown timer.
- Tapping anywhere on the screen dismisses the prompt so the guest can continue ordering.
- If the timer runs out (or if the guest taps "Start Over"), the cart clears automatically and returns to the attract screen for the next guest.
Quick On-Device Shortcut: Exiting Kiosk Mode 🔓
- On the kiosk's idle attract screen, tap the top-left corner of the screen 3 times within 10 seconds.
- The hidden Device Info menu will pop up on screen.
- Tap Change Mode and select your desired operating mode (e.g., POS).
📌 Note: If the device is permanently assigned to Kiosk mode in NX Portal, it will revert to Kiosk mode the next time it syncs. Use this touch shortcut for quick temporary troubleshooting, and update the device mode in Portal for permanent changes.
Troubleshooting Common Guest Ordering Issues 🔍
| Problem / Symptom 💡 | Likely Cause 🔍 | Solution / Fix 🛠️ |
| A modifier group or item is missing on Kiosk | The category, item, or modifier link is restricted in channel settings. | Ensure Kiosk is enabled under Check Source ("Allowed In") across all 3 modifier levels in Portal. (See Kiosk Setup Guide for full menu details!) |
| Modifier is charging full price instead of an upcharge | Missing default modifier price. |
Set the explicit upcharge amount (or $0.00 for free options) in Portal rather than falling back to the item's retail menu price.
|
| Guest cannot add multiple orders of a modifier | Group selection maximum limit is set too low. | Increase the modifier group's maximum selection count (e.g., set max to 2 for a "Choose 2 Meats" group). |
| Attract background disappeared temporarily | Temporary Wi-Fi/network connectivity dip. | Re-establish device internet access. Restarting the Kiosk app will force an immediate resync with your portal settings! |
