Getting Started: Opening a Cash Tray at the POS ๐ตโจ
Before you can accept cash payments on a drawer configured for accountability, you must open a Cash Tray. This process sets your "Starting Bank" and assigns the responsible staff members for that shift.
Where to Find Cash Tray Settings ๐
You can access the Cash Tray management screen from two places on your POS terminal:
Manager Menu: Tap the sidebar menu and select Manager Menu, then look for Cash Trays under the Financial section.
Utility Menu (Sidebar): Tap the sidebar menu and select Cash Trays directly.
Note: This option only appears if your venue has at least one drawer configured to "Require Cash Tray."
How to Open a New Tray ๐
Follow these steps to initialize your drawer:
Open the Cash Tray Window: From the list of trays, tap the blue New Tray button in the top right corner.
Select Your Drawer: Choose the physical cash drawer you are currently using (e.g., "Bar Drawer" or "Register 1").
Set the Starting Amount: Count your physical "bank" and enter that exact dollar amount into the Starting Amount field.
Assign Employees: Select your name and any other teammates who will be using this drawer during the shift.
Confirm: Review the summary (Drawer Name and Amount) and tap the blue Open Tray button.
The Opening Receipt ๐งพ
Once the tray is officially open, the POS will automatically print a Cash Tray Opened receipt. This slip serves as your physical audit trail and includes:
Drawer Name
Timestamp of when the tray was opened
Assigned Employees
Starting Amount (Your bank)
Keep this slip in your drawer or provide it to your manager as part of your opening side-work.
Pro-Tips for Cash Handling ๐ก
Stay Assigned: If you aren't assigned to the tray, NX will block you from taking cash payments. You can add more employees to an open tray at any time by tapping Add Employees on the main Cash Trays screen.
Accuracy Counts: Always count your bank before you open the tray in the system. If your starting count is wrong, your end-of-shift report will be "Short" or "Over."

The "New Tray" button is greyed out.
You likely don't have the Cash Tray: Open permission. Ask a manager to open the tray for you.
I selected the wrong drawer by accident.
If no transactions have been made yet, ask a manager to Close the tray immediately with the same amount it was opened with, then start a new one for the correct drawer.
